Tradescantia and Silver Agave

It's such fun to have clients who are risk takers. Here's what ya get. He's a brilliant architectural and fine art photographer; she's an interior designer. This west facing slope was covered with mostly dead Bermuda grass (the scourge of the west). The concept we mutually developed was large panels of ground cover, each with its own contrasting central element. In this case, it's Agave americana and Tradescantia pallida 'Purple Heart.' It stops traffic....really

And the only good Bermuda grass is dead Bermuda grass.
Have you tried sheet mulching to get rid of Bermuda (the grass, not the island)? Works pretty damn well in warm climates like yours.

Really cool look. Very Santa Barbara. That stuff would look like a pile of mush up here in the foothills this time of year. You folks in the mild parts of the state make me jealous. We don't have enough snow up the hill yet to ski my jealous thoughts away. Damn!
It looks beautiful. Oh and I had Bermuda Grass ... luckily we have nice soft grass here in Toronto.
I guess I missed you last GTS, so here goes, a week late, since you don't have a GTS post for this week. The Purple Heart/Agave americana combo is attractive. I have both, but not together. I've seen Purple Heart planted under Palo Brea and Palo Verde trees, and the lime greens a purples are also striking.

I never would have thought of those two plants planted together. The effect is pretty spectacular.
